Local Plan and Asset of Community Value

I am not in a position on a public forum to outline the emerging strategy to save the Camrose at this point- which would be simply tipping off the 'opposition' . But perhaps I can say a few words that may offer some reassurance. First, Martin French and I acknowledge we don't have all the answers and would welcome the support, input and ideas of others.

The Community Club Board aim to be energetically proactive in relation to the formidable challenge of saving the Camrose. A critical point in moving forward will be the AGM in early December. Overcoming the many obstacles - such as any unwillingness of Basron to give up on their proposals - requires detailed work behind the scenes, getting support of not just those committed to our cause but also key influencers across the nation and ensuring the right timing for refreshed concerted and coordinated action.

We know from regular exchanges with the Council that they have consistently flatly refused using public money on purchasing the Camrose -especially they say with coronavirus pressures on finances, and have abruptly declined to review alternative sites in council ownership. We are continuing dialogue with both the Council and individual councillors, making the case for retention and development of the Camrose as a community sports hub benefiting the whole community. The run up to the May 2021 council elections is a good time to intensify discussions. At the same time contingency planning means looking creatively at other sources of funding.

To those who are understandably impatient for action , I would point out that timing is important. The current lockdown and Christmas make it difficult to mount a public campaign. I would anticipate such a campaign being launched early in the New Year.

The achievement of AFC Wimbledon offer lessons to be learned (and Terry Brown is well placed to draw on their experience) gives cause for increased confidence but we must organise and operate effectively so it is not so long.
