Isthmian South Central Division 2nd April 2022
Marlow 0 v 0 Basingstoke Town Attendance 297
Where: The Campus Society Stadium, Imperial Fields, Bishopsford Road, Morden, Surrey. SM4 BF
A hard-earned point, which we will take with just four games remaining.
Dan Brownlie was forced to make a number of changes for today’s game: 1. Paul Strudley, 2. Aiden Lewis, 3. James Haworth, 3. Aiden Lewis, 4. Rob Sheridan, 5. Nathan Smart, 6. Ben Cook, 7. Simon Dunn (Capt), 8. D’Andre Brown, 9. Stefan Brown, 10. Lloyd Snell, 11. George Reid
On the bench:, McKoy Palmer, Marcio Neves, Jack French, Dan Williamson & Brody Peart
The game gets underway five minutes late with Stoke attacking the car-park end, with very little action in the first few minutes, although we win a corner in the sixth minute which Ben Cook takes and the short corner is pushed back to him, which he then finds Rob Sheridan who turns and hits a left-foot shot that the keeper comfortably saves,
Then on 13 minutes Marlow win a corner down on the right. The corner kick finds a Marlow striker who forces a fine save out of Paul Strudley in goal, and we are able downfield, and the ball is slipped through to Lloyd Snell down the left wing, but he takes a shot too quickly and the ball rolls wide of the left-hand post.
Then on 15 minutes, the first incident involving the Marlow keeper occurs as a heavy tackle between two players on the halfway-line, causes their keeper to race fifty yards to the referee to moan and complain. Some how this works as the referee changes his decision and awards Marlow the free-kick.
Both teams are unable to put anything on note together, except a corner for Marlow, that we defend well and clear up field.
Then on 32 mins, from a quick throw-in, the ball is put through, to George Reid who takes the ball into the penalty area, then hits a shot that the oncoming keeper is able to push out for a corner. From the corner there is a claim for a penalty as it hits a Marlow defenders hand, but the referee waves the calls away.
Still very little goalmouth action as we enter the last five minutes of normal time, when a lovely through allows Snell to run onto it, but the chance goes missing as his shot slides wide of the post.
Another attack has Reid put through but his shot from just inside the penalty area again fails to find the net, as it slides wide of the post.
The referee plays just over a minute of injury-time before he blows for halftime.
Halftime – Marlow 0 v 0 Basingstoke Town
The second-half gets underway with us attacking the covered end, we win a corner in the 48th minute, but the short corner creates nothing.
Then from a long clearance Marlow break down the left and their forward finds space and hit a shot that smashes off the underside of the crossbar and it is pushed out for a corner. Again we are able to defend the corner.
Marlow then win a free-kick about 25yds out, but the kick is blocked by the wall.
Then just past the hour, their keeper from a cross goes down claiming he has been fouled by our player, but the referee rightly waves him away.
The next few minutes Marlow edge the game, but a shot from long range goes five yards wide.
We make our first change with a simple switch with McKoy Palmer replacing George Reid (70 minutes).
Fifteen minutes to go and Marlow win another corner, but again we hold firm and are able to clear the ball. Another Marlow corner a few minutes later, again fails to produce anything on our goal.
We make our second change on 83 minutes with Brody Peart replacing Lloyd Snell.
We push forward for the final two minutes but are unable to create any opening.
We then make our final change on 91 minutes, with Simon Dunn being replaced by Jack French.
The referee plays just two minutes of injury-time, before he blows the full-time whistle and Stoke leave Buckinghamshire with a hard-earned point.
Full-time Score: Marlow 0 v 0 Basingstoke Town
Match Thought’s
Not the best of entertaining games, but with results from the other teams around, we are able to consolidate our fifth place in the table, with just four games to play. Good to see young Lloyd Snell get a start, and good to see a hard-working George Reid last seventy minutes.
Both teams had a couple of chances, but failed to find the net.
Up Next:
Hopefully we picked up no further injuries and Conor Lynch and others are fit for next week as we face an improving South Park side at Winklebury next Saturday.
