We return to Winklebury this weekend following our second-half collapse against Marlow, to face Sutton Common Rovers, a team that we split the games last season, with each team winning on each-others pitch.
We started out with a 5-1 win at Gander Green Lane, after going behind early, a Bradley Wilson hat-trick (including that first-half wonder strike), plus goals from Anton Rodgers and Lloyd Snell were enough to win on the day. We then hosted them in March this year, and let’s just say that we were not at our best losing 3-0 on the day.
Our Opponents
The Rovers are managed by both Darren Salmon & Lee Flavin. Salmon, is part of the Salmon family who founded and currently run the club.
The Rovers sit in thirteenth place with an overall record of Pld 11 Won 4 Drawn 1 Lost 6 with 13pts. Their record is however far better away than at home, with 3 wins and 3 losses. These three wins were at Chipstead, Marlow and more recently Thatcham Town. Last weekend they comfortably beat lowly Tooting & Mitcham Utd 3-0 at their latest temporary ground in Whyteleafe.
Their leading strikers are 27 year-old Shawn Lyle, who has three goals this season. A big powerful player who played for Whyteleafe & Guildford City, before joining in 2021 from Westfield. Whilst ex-Lewes and Farnborough forward Tony Halsey has two goals on the season, having scored five goals last season for Chertsey Town.
In midfield they have Kyron Richards who has three goals and was at Leatherhead and before that Lewes & Cray Wanderers. Add Courtney Swaby, who plays out on the wing and joined from nearby South Park. Kevin Songolo is a tall midfielder, who has played for Harrow Borough and can also play at the back. They also have Jephte Tanga who has two goals for Rovers, since joining from Royston Town.
In defence they have Bertie Lloyd a reliable centre-back who joined from nearby Merstham, with fellow centre-back Hugo Odogwu-Atkinson who is a former Spurs youth player who has also spent time at various clubs such as Romford and Ebbsfleet Utd before joining Rovers. Kevin Diomande who played for Bedfont Sports before joining Hendon in June, is currently on dual registration with the Rovers. Right-back Rhamar Garrett-Douglas, was a regular for Barnet U18’s before joining Hullbridge Sports, and a season at Maldon & Tiptree, Royston Town and then Kempston Rovers, before joining Rovers at the start of this season.
In goal it is likely to be 18 year-old Endurance Johnson, who has played for Colchester Utd U18’s before joining Hampton & Richmond. He joined the Rovers on a 3 month loan deal at the start of the season.
Our Basingstoke Town Side
A two-goal halftime lead last weekend at second-placed Marlow, soon evaporated in the second-half, as we could not deal with the pace of the homeside, and once more when under pressure, we seemed to drop ten yards, and gave possession to the opposition. With Marlow’s talented forward line they took full advantage and ran out comfortable winners.
This week we face a team from the bottom-half of the team in SCR, who concede an average of two goals a game in the league, so our forwards Ezio Touray & Bradley Wilson will look to break them down. Ezio added yet another goal last weekend and now has 12 league & cup goals on the season whilst Wilson has added ten goals. George Reid who looks to be back to his best scored again at Marlow and now has six on the season. Depending on how we set-up we may go with an extra attacking player with the possible return of Sam Argent or Marcio Neves or Stefan Brown in contention for that slot.
In midfield with Simon Dunn hobbling off injured last weekend, I would be surprised if he be back fit to start, and will either take a seat on the bench or be given extra time to recover. With that belief, Michael Atkinson will lead the midfield and wear the Captain’s armband. D’Andre Brown is likely to be in the mix for a starting role, and could James Clark once again be asked to fill in here. Anton Rodgers back fit is also an option, Luis Le Paih’s knee injury means he is still at least two weeks away from returning.
At the back unless one of the current back four players has picked up am injury, then it means it will be from right-to-left Ben Upton, Scott Armsworth, Billy Upton & Hames Hayworth. Callum Winchcombe, Nathan Smart and Aiden Lewis are next-in-line.
Mark Scott will again wear the No.1 shirt this Saturday.
Manager Dan Brownlie, will look to get the team back to winning ways and his team selection and pre-match team talk will be critical in achieving this.
Sutton Common Rovers will bring their own gameplan in trying to upset us, but the key for Stoke is to keep the play in the opponents half and put them under as much pressure as possible to stifle any attacking threats.
It’s November the 5th, so why not get along to Winklebury and watch Stoke set off some proper fireworks.
Please note we will having our remembrance day presentation and two minutes silence before the game.
