First and foremost, I must thank everyone for their kind messages of support and encouragement upon receiving notification that I had been given the Manager’s job. It’s a proud moment for me to lead a club like this, a club I have learned to love over the course of my year here.
Obviously, the news was bittersweet. I enjoyed working under Martin as I have under the two previous managers here (Jason & Terry). I learned a lot under Kuhly – his football brain and extensive knowledge of the game is quite incredible. He was the first to wish me well in my new role which is a mark of the man.
I’m proud to shoulder the responsibility of our Club’s much needed improvement and whilst there is always great expectation here; I do not fear it’s pressure nor consider it a weight.
I’m not foolish enough to believe it’s going to be an overnight process; nor am I naive enough to believe that corners do not have to be turned quickly. That’s all said with unwavering confidence that our group of lads will be doing everything in their power to ensure we’re constantly battling to be better to reach a standard worthy of the shirt. It will take time; but in those moments in-between, our group effort and determination will never be questioned.
I know all too well just how much this club means to the people of Basingstoke. My players will understand that too and realise the responsibility it holds when wearing that badge.
Whilst I sit here writing feeling somewhat overindulgent in bathing in the glory of my appointment; in truth even the publication of this article doesn’t sit too well with me. The reason? The club must always come first. This is about Basingstoke Town Football Club and the efforts being made by everyone to rekindle its former glory. That said, I understand the need and desire for communication and news, particularly in what is a difficult period for the club. I want everyone to feel a part of this great Club and to enable us to do that; you need to get an insight.
On Saturday we take on a much-fancied North Leigh side where they have already stated their ‘quiet confidence’ going into the game. It’s time to take the shackles off and live in the land of ‘why not’ – it’s the FA Trophy, a hugely important competition that I’ll not hide away from wanting to do well in. What that entails will be down to the boys but we’ll be going with the toolkit to put in a performance. I don’t need a rally cry for your support of our boys, it comes as standard - but what will be worth noting is the difference it can make knowing they have your support.
This is going to be a long and hard road, but one I am looking forward to marching alongside you all.
There will be ups and down, highs and lows but I hope you all enjoy the ride.
Strap yourselves in!
