Basingstoke Town signed off their season with an entertaining 5-4 away victory at Staines.
Both the weather & the match pretty much mirrored the season as a whole for Town, it was 'sunshine & showers' all the way. Scoring goals has been a problem for 'Stoke all season but not today. Taking the game by the scruff of the neck they raced into a 3-0 lead with two well taken goals from striker Nicholas Bignall either side of a fine Wes Daly strike from distance. Basingstoke looked confident on the ball & assured in possession for much of the first half and manager Jason Bristow will also be very satisfied with the overall performance for young keeper Joe McDonnell despite conceding four at the other end.
Shortly before the break Staines pulled a goal back with a good side foot finish from Louie-Rae Beadle into the far corner after Town failed to make defensive clearances.
After the break Basingstoke were again the dominant force, fine work down the right from Nathan Smart & a cross stood up at the back post saw Nicholas Bignall head powerfully home for his hat-trick before possibly the goal of the game, a powerful strike from distance saw Louie Soares make it 5-1 to the visitors.
But not for the first time the foot was eased off the accelerator & Basingstoke were second best for the final twenty minutes with top scorer Louie Theophanous reducing the deficit for Staines, then in a final flurry Dan Brown & Erivaldo Felix made it 5-4 before time ran out on the Staines comeback.
All in all an entertaining match which sent the away supporters home in good heart.
