Isthmian South Central Division – 9th April 2022
Basingstoke Town 3 v 2 South Park Attendance 435
Where: Winklebury Sports Complex, Winklebury Way, Basingstoke. RG23 8BF
Stoke are pushed all the way, but three first-half goals secure the victory.
Dan Brownlie made a number of changes since last week’s draw at Marlow with the line-up: 1. Paul Strudley, 2. Dan Williamson, 3.James Haworth, 4. Robert Sheridan, 5. Nathan Smart (Capt), 6. Ben Cook, 7. George Reid 8. D’Andre Brown, 9. Stefan Brown, 10. Conor Lynch, 11. McKoy Palmer
On the bench: Simon Dunn, Marcio Magalhaes-Nevez, Lloyd Snell, Jonathan Boardman & Anton Rodgers
Referee – Matthew Ruston
The game got underway with Basingstoke attacking the railway end in the first half and there was nothing to note in the first five minutes. Then South Park win a corner, which we clear and break down field, then just at the end of the seventh minute, we break down the right, and McKoy Palmer slides the ball across to an open Conor Lynch who hooks the ball past the keeper. GOAL ! Basingstoke Town 1- 0 South Park (Lynch 7 mins)
We come forward again two minutes later, but a timely tackle just outside the box by South Park’s No.6 stops the attack.
Then on the 17th minute we win the ball in midfield and Ben Cook slides the ball to Palmer down the left who takes the ball into the box before shooting, but the keeper plans the shot to an advancing Lynch, who from three yards some how clips the ball onto the top of the bar and over for a goal-kick.
South Park then have the next attack, but the cross from the right is comfortably met by Paul Strudley in goal.
We then win a free-kick about five yards inside South Park’s half. Ben Cook touches the ball to Palmer who takes one touch then hits a thunderbolt from all of forty yards that takes the keeper by complete surprise and it bounces once before flying past the keeper into the corner of the net. GOAL !! Basingstoke Town 2 - 0 South Park (Palmer20 mins)
Melford Simpson the gigantic No.9 makes his presence noted as he bundles through two players but the ball runs away to Strudley in goal. The Sparks come forward again but two defenders seem to confuse each other and we lose the ball inside our penalty area, but Cook makes a timely interception and takes the ball clear from the goal area.
Then on 28 minutes a neat run by George Reid as he cuts inside from the right wing and takes it past two defenders, before his pass to Stefan Brown is blocked and South Park break down the left wing, and they win a free-kick for a foul on their player. The kick is an in-swinging cross that dangerously flies across the face of the goal and out for a goal-kick.
Then on 35 minutes, we win the ball again and Cook slides the ball to James Haworth who races down the left wing, and sends over a lovely hard low cross, that Reid meets first time and he smashes his shot a foot wide of the right-hand post.
The first of two strange calls by the referee as he allows Park’s Simpson to push over D’Andre Brown and the referee waves play-on, only to then award a throw-in to the visitors after the ball clearly bounces off one of their players.
Our next attack comes via Dan Williamson who breaks down the right wing and sends over a cross that rebounds off their defender and we are unable to get a shot on goal and the Sparks are able to hook the ball clear.
Then South Park win a throw-in down the left, and their No. 4, makes it clear he is a long-throw specialist by sending the ball deep into our penalty area and the ball bounces around in our box, before a South park player knocks the ball past Strudley into the net. Basingstoke Town 2 – 1 South Park.
Then on 45 minutes, I turn my head for 20 seconds and in that time, and I am reliably informed that Conor Lynch adds his second and Stoke’s third and he clips the ball over the South Park keeper. GOAL !! Basingstoke Town 3 - 1 South Park (Lynch 45 mins)
The game gets back underway and a minute later the referee blows the halftime and we go into the break with a deserved two-goal lead.
Halftime - Basingstoke Town 3 v 1 South Park
The games gets back underway and South Park press forward and there is a shout for a handball inside our box, but the referee waves the call away.
The next attack of note is on 54 minutes, as Smart wins the ball and finds D’Andre, who sends the ball through to Lynch who takes the ball into the box, but his shot from an acute angle beats the keeper, but flies just past the far post and out for a goal-kick.
The referee then waves play on as Mr Gigantic ploughs his way through Haworth and then give the visitors the throw-in.
Then on 58 minutes we miss the chance to increase our lead as we break down the right and the cross finds D’Andre who slices his shot over the bar from close range.
South Park are pushing forward as they seem to win the ball more and more from midfield over the next few minutes, which includes a timely block by Smart from a close range shot out for a corner. They then win a throw-in from the corner-kick, which causes more concerns from the long throw specialist and the ball rolls out for another corner. This kick is headed clear by Ben Cook, but South Park come straight back, but the ball rolls lose to Strudley in goal.
The visitors continue to come forward and win a free-kick, that is sent over the far post, where Mr Gigantic fortunately heads the balls two feet wide of the far post.
South Park seem to be encamped in our half and they win yet another throw-in which is initially punched clear by Strudley but comes straight back in and finds a Sparks forward who knocks the ball home. Basingstoke 3 – 2 South Park.
Another strange decision as the referee awards South Park a corner despite Haworth get clobbered in the back of the head, as he states that our own player hits him.
We make our first change as Conor Lynch is replaced by Lloyd Snell (72 mins).
It is still the visitors who continue to push forward then win another corner. From the corner Park’s No.8 clearly heads the ball wide out for a goal-kick, only for the referee to award another corner to the visitors. D’Andre heads the ball clear.
We make our second change on 80 mins as Jon Boardman replaces George Reid, however Boardman’s first contribution is to lose the ball 25 yards out from our goal, and they win another corner from this on the right. Again we are able to head clear the ball.
We then have two small incursions in South Park’s half, as Stefan Brown receives the ball just outside their penalty area, and neatly goes past to defenders, only for a third to knock the ball out for a corner. The second attack is when we win the ball on the halfway line and slide the ball across to Lloyd Snell on the left who cuts inside the penalty area, only for his fierce shot to take a touch of the keeper and flies out for a corner on the right-hand side. Nothing develops from either corner-kick.
We then make our final change on 88 mins, as Simon Dunn replaces McKoy Palmer.
We now head into injury-time, uncertain of how long is left and we seem to be holding them, when Nathan Smart gets clobbered by a South Park player and he requires treatment from Gideon our physio. Smart has his head bandaged and the game gets back underway three minutes later. We then win the ball and Dunn sends Snell away who outpaces his defender and slides the ball across to Cook, who scuffs his shot and South Park clear.
We are now in nine minutes of injury-time and South Park push forward and a cross is caught by Strudley.
Calls from the Stoke crowd are ignored as minute ten of injury-time comes and goes as we head into minute eleven and finally the referee blows the full-time whistle and Stoke have consolidated their playoff place with the win.
Full-time Score: Basingstoke Town 3 v 2 South Park
Lynch 7 & 45 mins, Palmer 20 mins King 41 mins, Bell 68 mins,
Match Thought’s
First-half dominance falls to second-half panic, with us holding on for the win, but three crucial points. Some may ask if the referee put a red South Park shirt on under his black uniform at halftime, as some shocking one-way decisions were on show today.
Conor’s two goals secures his Golden Boot trophy for the season, and a moment of quick thinking and a thunderous long-range shot, sends up into fourth place with three games to go.

We now head into the Easter weekend double-header, starting with Friday’s 1pm kick-off at Westfield.
