Stoke extended their winning streak to eight games with a dominant and controlled performance against what was a under strength Marlow side, who had it’s main striking assets on the bench. A headed finish by Scott Armsworth, gave us a first-half lead and despite plenty of possession, it wasn’t until the 80th minute that another neat move and header by Sam Argent confirmed all three points.
Still seven points clear at the top of the league it brings us to a second match-up in four days against a playoff contender, this time against Chertsey Town at Winklebury, where back in our first match-up on a Friday night in September last year, we dominated throughout the game leaving Surrey with a three-goal victory with a brace from Ezio Touray and a goal by Bradley Wilson.
Our Opponents
The Curfews have undergone another managerial change since we beat them back in September, as Wayne Carter was replaced by former boss Dave Anderson. Anderson led the team to promotion and their FA Vase glory back in 2018, and after a short retirement and a spell as an assistant at Barnet FC, he has returned to the Curfews.
Chertsey currently sit in fourth place as they visit Winklebury tomorrow night, with a league record of Played 25 Won 13 Drawn 5 Lost 7 Points 44pts. Their away record sits at 6 Wins 3 Draws and 5 Losses.
After surprisingly losing 3-0 at home to Thatcham a week ago, they went on the road last Saturday, to an improving Leatherhead and came away comfortable 3-1 winners.
They have the league’s third highest goal-scorer in William Montague, who has 15 goals, 14 in the league. Montague, spent the 20/21 season at Windsor Fc. Ex-Hartley Wintney striker Jake Baxter who has been at the club the last couple of seasons, has added eight goals this season. Trevan Robinson another striker has seven goals this season and has played for clubs such as Cobham, Hanwell & Egham. Another experienced striker is Jonathan Hippolyte, who has four goals, and has been at a large number of clubs, but more recently at Bracknell Town, Met Police, and at Hanworth Villa earlier this season, before returning to the Curfews in November.
In midfield they have Alex Paine, who was previously at Uxbridge, whilst 33-year old Samuel Murphy, was previously at Hendon and has added two goals this season. There is Kai Hamilton-Olise, who has added four goals from his midfield role.
Their defence has Mason Welch-Turner who joined them in June 2021 from Egham, whilst Manolis Gogonas is another defender who joined from Walton Casuals having been at Kingstonian previously. Daryl Harrison, is another defender who played at Ashford Town before joining Chertsey.
In goal will be Nick Jupp, who recently underwent an operation, but was back between the sticks last Saturday. Jupp, has played for clubs such as Aldershot Town, Barnet and St Albans City, prior to returning the Curfews for a second stint.
Our Basingstoke Town Side
Another week and another win and three points as we faced, met and defeated another playoff opponent and secured our seven point lead at the top of the table. This gives us a league record of Pld 25 Won 18 Drawn 2 Lost 5 with 56 points. We lead the league in goals scored (62), with our closest rival Walton & Hersham on 55, with a strong defence, gives us a +39 goal difference, which 15 ahead of W&H and tonight’s opponents Chertsey.
Bradley Wilson, became creator for both goals last Saturday, firstly his corner-kick, then his second-half chip to Sam Argent. He still sits way ahead of the league goal-scoring with twenty-three goals. Sam Argent’s goal, now gives him five on the season, whilst ex-Hartley partner Paul Hodges, was again influential in a lot of our attacks throughout the game. George Reid on fourteen goals, will be the attacking player down the right
Unless Manager Dan Brownlie wants to change things up, then the attack looks set, which means Marcio Neves, James Clark & Brody Peart are likely to be options off the bench.
Simon Dunn, who was replaced just before the delayed kick-off was hoping to be back, tomorrow night, but if not it is hoped that he will pass the captains armband to Michael Atkinson who also left the ground with a knock. Therefore if either one are given the night off and a chance to rest, then D’Andre Brown & Ben Cook will look to be the holding midfielders. There is the option to push Ben Mason into this area, or if required, recall Lewis Hayden from his loan deal whilst gaining match fitness. Aiden Lewis who has not made the match-day squad for some time, could also be an option.
With the expectation of a tough game against Marlow, the defence stood up and met the challenge awaiting them, and apart from the occasional attack, we held them at bay quite comfortably. It also saw centre-back Scott Armsworth get his first goal of the season, with a superb glancing header at the near post, which opened the scoring, and alongwith Billy Upton, they will look to do the same tomorrow. Markus Johnson-Schuster started at right back, and you will have to assume he starts in front of Ben Mason tomorrow, whilst Callum Winchcombe looks to be the left-back once again. The likely substitutions include Nathan Smart & Ben Mason.
Paul Strudley continues to be the starting keeper, and had another clean sheet last Saturday.
We won the first six-pointer Saturday and tomorrow will be another test and another six-pointer, where we can send a second message to the other clubs, that we mean to stay at the top of the table.
Chertsey will bring a very experienced squad to Winklebury, but we have the talent and belief that we can win any game nowadays and I hope and expect Winklebury will be rocking with another large home crowd.
With second-placed Walton & Hersham travelling to third-placed Northwood on the same evening, let’s concern ourselves about getting the three points against Chertsey and look at other results afterwards.
