Southern League Premier South Division – Tuesday 22nd October 2024
Basingstoke Town 1 v 1 Hungerford Town Attendance 585
Where: Winklebury Centre, Winklebury Way, Basingstoke. RG23 8BF
Manager Dan Brownlie’s line-up for this evening match was: 1. Simon Grant, 2. Markus Johnson-Schuster, 3. Curtis Angell, 4. Jack Ball, 18. James Clark, 6. William Upton (Capt), 7. Max Smith, 8. Rudy Appiah-Allen, 9. Liam Ferdinand, 10. Samuel Deadfield, 11. D’Andre Brown
On the bench: 12. Nnamdi Nwachuku, 14. Dan Warre, 15. Alex Kokoszka, 16. Flynn Bolton & 17. Josh Grant
Referee – Will Briers
This evenings match got underway with many fans worried about our starting line-up, as we attacked the car-park end, and Hungerford’s first attack came in the sixth minute, as somehow their attacker missed a chance putting the ball wide from close range.
Stoke’s first attack was on ten minutes, as good work from D’Andre Brown, gave Liam Ferdinand a chance to shoot, but his shot flew wide.
On fifteen minutes, the visitors missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring, as their striker hit the post from close range, and another Hungerford player hit pulled the rebound wide.
Hungerford were through again a few minutes later, but the striker slide-footed his shot wide of the far right-hand post.
Hungerford’s corner count was mounting-up but they surprisingly didn’t get one, as another Hungerford was sent clear, but his shot appeared to flick off Simon Grants outstretched hand, as the ball went inches wide.
With just a few minutes to go to the break, Hungerford created another chance, but a curling left-foot shot was well saved by Grant.
Despite all the pressure it was Stoke who nearly took the lead, as Ferdinand set us down the right, but there was no-one to tap in the cross from the right, and although Curtis Angell, collected the ball at the back post, and set-up Ferdinand, but his shot was blocked away.
The referee allowed two added-minutes and we went into the break level.
Halftime Score: Basingstoke Town 0 v 0 Hungerford Town
Before the second-half got underway, Stoke made two attacking changes, with Nnamdi Nwachuku replacing James Clark, and Dan Warre replacing D’Andre Brown.
There’s was more goal-threat in the first few minutes, whilst a call for handball was correctly waived away in the opening minutes.
Despite all our possession, Hungerford broke down the right and a left-foot shot, possibly deflected, beats Grant in goal and Stoke go behind. Basingstoke 0-1 Hungerford
Stoke pushed forward and we were looking to attack down the left through Nwachuku and his cross skims off the head of someone in the box, to Billy Upton at the far post, who made no mistake as his header found the back of the net. GOAL! Basingstoke Town 1 – 1 Hungerford Town (67 mins)
Stoke looked to take the lead, but crosses over the next few minutes were easily defended by the visitors, and it was them who forced the next goal-scoring chance as a left-foot shot was parried away by Grant out for a corner on the right.
Stoke then made it’s third change in the final minute of normal time as Aleks Kokoszka replaced Curtis Angell (89 mins).
Stoke pushed for one more chance and won a corner, but again this was easily dealt with by the Hungerford keeper and the referee blew the final whistle on what was a drab performance.
Full-time Score: Basingstoke Town 1 v 1 Hungerford Town
Upton 67 minutes Regula 64 mins
Match Thought’s
At home and playing a team who sat seventeenth in the table, and despite injuries to our wide-outs, you would have thought we would have a much more attacking line-up. Ferdinand worked his socks off mostly on his own for forty-five minutes, and despite us being more attack-minded, goalmouth opportunities were really far and few between in the second-half.
Two points dropped and Swindon will be looking at last night’s performance and could be licking their lips. Let’s hope not.
