A goal from a free kick on the stroke of half time gave the visitors a deserved win.
Hemel dominated the first half and only some dogged defending and inspired goalkeeping kept them at bay. A free kick conceded on the left edge of the box saw the visitors captain ; and best player on the park; curl the ball over the wall and into the corner of the net.
Stoke had a little bit more of the play in the second half but had a close call when the visitors centre forward headed past the post from close in when it looked easier to score. Basingstoke's best effort came from a long range free kick which went narrowly past the post.
All in all very disappointing but it is only the first match so early days. Hemel played really well and should do well in this division.
Absolutely awful from Stoke. We need cover in the centre of defence and the midfield was completely outplayed. We appear to have a lot of forwards but nobody to feed them the ball. There's not much point in mowing the grass as we never seem to put the ball on the deck. First game of the season and we've resorted to aimlessly hoofing it up the pitch. If it wasn't for the keeper we would have been beaten by a lot more. Hemel must hope all teams are as bad as us. With two difficult away games to come we could be bottom of the league by next Saturday. Let's hope things improve quickly.
Gutless and heartless display , hoof ball for most of the game they closed us down all over the pitch and we had no plan B worst of all is when things are not going right the management on the bench are slumped in their seats looking sorry for themselves. which is not just a reflection on todays game, it was as if we have carried on from last season in the same manner.
Reading comments like the above is very worrying. Having gone to such lengths to increase public awareness of the club, which appeared to be successful, and then start the season in what appears to have been such an ineffective manner, must put at risk all that pre-season effort. A good result at Bath is now essential
No complaints about the result. Hemel were well organised and their players knew their jobs. We played too many long balls out from the back, bypassing the midfield and Liam was living off scraps. I know it's early days but a massive improvement is needed if we are to get anything at Bath and Bromley.
We looked a complete shadow of the side that passed the ball about confidently in pre-season against much better sides than Hemel (no offence to them of course as they impressed me a lot yesterday with their organisation).
The game just showed that we lack a player such as Wes Daly in the middle of the park. We lost the midfield yesterday and therefore lost the game. The 3 of McAuley, Dunn and Jenkinson consistently lost possession and came off 2nd best in the 50/50s.
Performance needs to be 5x better if we're to get anything from Bath. They may have lost 3-0 yesterday but they'll be a different prospect at home I feel. I'd take a point from there and then from Bromley now to be honest though really we need to win one after yesterday.
I'd like to see Bignall get a start and hopefully David Ray will be back to give us more bite between the defence and midfielders.
