Basingstoke moved to the top of the league with a narrow win over Whitehawk.
The visitors started well and put together some crisp passing moves. 'Stoke defended well and should have taken the lead when a good right wing cross was headed just over the bar. However a minute later Basingstoke took the lead when Bird got free on the left after good interplay and the accurate cross was headed in by CHRIS FLOOD. The goal buoyed the 'stoke up and they set about the visitors playing some great football. A second goal looked on the cards as the pressure mounted and Liam Enver Marum got free with a good run to create a one on one with the keeper. The visitors custodian came out on top with a good save.
Whitehawk came back into the game towards half time and only some smart clearances prevented an equaliser.
The second half was mostly one way traffic towards the 'stoke goal as Whitehawk had almost constant possession. The home defence were outstanding and restricted a good Whitehawk side to a few clear chances. The two substitutes Jamie Brown and Andrew Jenkinson both did well helping the defence. Stuart Moore had a few smart saves and when he was finally beaten the ball crashed off the outside of the post.
Four minutes of injury time were added and a late free kick was defended. The final whistle went and Basingstoke Town are top of the league.
We've ground out two results against two very physical teams in the past four days, games we would have drawn or lost in years gone by. Fantastic team spirit right now and some very nice football being played in periods with some superb defending at other times. To see us top of the league after 11 games is a testament to the hard work being put in on and off the pitch.
It wasn't our best performance but I thought the lads showed great character to hold on, particularly in the second half when Whitehawk had the majority of the play. The back four were excellent and Louie Soares had a great game in midfield.
Long may this good run continue as the table looks good with Town at the top of it
