A win in the league at last against a very good passing team in Whitehawk
I think the phrase "Smash & Grab" was made for that game tonight.
We sat back for a lot of the game with Flood's excellent opening goal coming from our best, and possibly, only passing move of the 1st half. A good early ball from Gilkes to Macca who held the ball up well for Bird's overlap. His backheel was perfect & Bird then burst into the box, delayed his cross until he was able to find Flood at the near post. A really good goal.
After that, it was attack v defense for most of the half except for a few free kicks & one shot from Soares which their GK dealt with.
Whitehawk are a good passing team & we really struggled to win the ball of them at all, we were sitting too deep, although we did seem to have an organised shape to the team we didn't really make many efforts to press our opponents. This pattern continued into the 2nd half & the goal for Whitehawk came early in the 2nd half, they continued to create & miss some decent chances & we made them pay.
Basingstoke punished them in the 89th minute with a really well worked goal with sub Simon Dunn playing a 1-2, breaking into the box & finishing calmly.
As Whitehawk tried to push for an equaliser Will Salmon broke away down the right & played a good pass to Lloyd Macklin who was unmarked in the box, he finished well to seal a 3-1 win.
Great celebrations from the fans at the end.
